Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): SEO for the AI Era

Search is fundamentally changing. Users aren't looking for a list of ten blue links anymore; they are asking Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Google's AI Overviews for direct answers. If your brand isn't part of that synthesized answer, you don't exist.

From Keywords to Entities

Traditional SEO was about keywords, search volume, and backlinks. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is about entities, relationships, and context. AI models don't "read" pages the way web crawlers do—they extract facts and build knowledge graphs.

To win in GEO, you need to provide clear, machine-readable summaries. Your content needs to be highly structured. Using JSON-LD schema markup is no longer optional; it is the absolute baseline for establishing your brand's authority.

Feeding the LLMs

Forward-thinking brands are actively creating content designed specifically for AI consumption. Having a clean llms.txt file at the root of your domain—acting as a high-density, context-rich summary for AI crawlers—is quickly becoming as essential as your robots.txt.

Furthermore, you have to monitor hallucinations. If an AI engine is recommending a competitor's product while citing your brand's research, you are leaking value. You need to consistently prompt these engines to see how your brand is positioned.

The New Discovery Funnel

This shift means top-of-funnel website traffic will inevitably drop. Users will get their answers directly in the chat interface. You need to optimize for inclusion in the prompt response, not just the click-through. This ties directly into how we market to algorithms, a concept explored in Agentic Commerce. Marketing teams must now convince both human consumers and rational AI agents.
